Transformation

Promenade I, Ben Dahliwal

Artists, especially painters, respond to music. I personally work with music
constantly in the background. Standing in front of, or at the end of the queue
of musicians and artists who have experimented with Mussorgsky Pictures
at an exhibition, as a visual artist, there is always the risk of responding to
the images which inspired the music, rather than the music and subsequent
re-interpretations and responses that are now part of the suite’s history.
The whole function of 19th century program music is, after all, to paint pictures
and Mussorgsky by giving each image a title is asking the listener to re-paint
the images for themselves.
