“…configuring Hartmann’s walk through the Paris catacombs, this piece
reflects the somber mood arising in response to encountering piles of human
skulls and other bones located there. Principally, I visualize and instantiate
designs and images of DNA sequences. Here, those sequences which make
an essential contribution to the formation of the human skeleton e.g. the
myostatin gene, are used. These sequences “survive” even in the skulls
of the dead and remain far beyond the limits of life, continuing to function
as information carrier. In the same way, works of art outlast their
creative spirits and indeed their creators. They too serve the living as
a ‘coded’ message and perhaps also a lesson….”
